Jen Murtha is the chief operating officer for Teaching Matters, a nonprofit that increases teacher effectiveness to improve student success. Jen leads the implementation of organizational strategy including planning, organizing, operating and staffing all Teaching Matters services within New York City and nationally. Jen is responsible for creating and cultivating critical internal systems and structures across all functions of the organization ensuring effective alignment and collaboration on mission-critical initiatives. Through her leadership, Teaching Matters successfully scales school support services across hundreds of schools in three geographic locations. Prior to joining Teaching Matters, Jen served as a teacher, instructional coach and school leader focused on servicing students impacted by opportunity gaps in education. She was also a co-founder of ReadWorks.org, providing free reading curriculum online to teachers worldwide, where she honed her skills in nonprofit management of scaled initiatives. Jen earned a bachelor's degree in computer science, with a minor in business administration, from the University of North Carolina at Wilmington and a master's degree in elementary education from the University of Central Florida.
