4 Things Every Teacher Needs to Know Before Going Back to School

Back-to-school time is a hectic and often stressful part of everyone’s year. Students, parents and teachers alike are bombarded with lists of what and what not to do, what kind of supplies they need to get through the school year and advice columns from people who’ve been there before. While those columns are often essential pieces to prepare you, these things can blend together and your eyes may begin to glaze over. School is meant to be something special and occasionally fun. Sometimes you need advice that’s a little less about choosing markers and a little more about how to get your kid(s) through the school year. With that in mind, Education Post has you covered. We’ve already covered what students and parents need to know. Now it’s your turn, teachers.

Tips for teachers

1. Make punishments goofy. When kids misbehave, make them do a weird dance as penance. “Sorry, [student’s name], you know the rules. Time to do the Watusi in front of the class.”

2. Be prepared but don’t flip out when the preparations don’t always go how you expected or wanted. Plan your days extensively but remember that there will be moments when you or the students get sidetracked.

3. Freeze tons of food in the days before you start back at school. It’ll help when you’re tired after those long early days. Then you can just sit in front of the TV with some reheated pasta or whatever you like to eat to decompress.

4. Plan a little downtime into each day. Tell students to get a head start on their homework in those moments, for 10 or 15 minutes. Think of it like a kickback to kids, who occasionally act like corrupt politicians. “I’m giving you an early start on your afternoon and evening.” Chances are they’ll respond positively.
