Across this country, there is a level of allowance given to students who look like the dominant culture while there seems to be no patience for children who look like mine. My presence pushed the conversation to discuss these issues that many people were not aware even existed at all. I was able to leverage my voice to make changes for my son, and as an author and a speaker, I have been able to do that for others, by encouraging restorative justice as a discipline policy and pointing out the
Obama-era guidelines that discourage zero-tolerance policies and encourage positive behavior intervention strategies. There were times when I felt helpless, but even telling this story today, raising awareness about this pervasive issue, in some small way, hopefully will ignite a conversation and possibly make a difference.
