Beyoncé’s not the only member of her family going all out for higher education.
Her husband, Jay-Z, is showing how important historically Black colleges and universities (HBCUs) are for Black students pursuing higher education.
According to Blavity, Jay-Z’s Shawn Carter Foundation has partnered with Toyota on a project to inform students about their higher education options at HBCUs like Morehouse College in Atlanta, where the project held its first event of a weeklong national tour on April 22.
The program will take high schoolers from New York and New Jersey to HBCUs to meet with admissions officials, administration, current students and others on campus to show what these prestigious schools offer prospective students. Throughout the rest of the year, it also holds workshops for students interested in HBCUs.
The musical power couple has been doing a lot for HBCUs in the year-plus since Beyoncé’s 2018 Coachella headlining performance dedicated to the institutions.
She has since donated $100,000 to four HBCUs for scholarship programs.
The Carter Foundation’s Shawn Carter Scholars program invests in students who “all have a compelling desire to pursue higher education, in spite of many personal, socio-economic setbacks, including teen pregnancy, former incarceration, interrupted schooling, poverty and homelessness.”
Every student should have the opportunity to explore the options that lie ahead.
