Educator Spotlight: 'We Need Some Mexican Teachers'

DJ Cervantes is a Latino teacher who used to self-identify as white. Why? Because that's what he learned to do when he was in school. Read DJ's story of how one afternoon his own students came to him with an important request...and helped him realize why schools need Latino teachers, now more than ever before.
“See, Mr. C., that’s why we’ve been cutting up in your room.  Look at that rice!  You’re Mexican!  We’re tired of you saying you’re white.  We need you to say you’re Mexican, because you get us.  We need some Mexican teachers.” In one short statement, he made it clear that I had let my long legacy of Mexican leadership falter.
