In great news for students (and parents, let’s be honest), Seattle teachers and their district have reached an agreement and both teachers and students will be back in the classroom tomorrow. Unfortunately, this strike still resulted in seven days of learning lost for those students. For a little bit of perspective and irony, here are a few places across the country where students in public charter schools gain well over seven additional days of learning in reading or math (or both!).
On average, the charter schools in the 40 urban regions identified in the 2015 Urban Charter School study from the Center for Research on Education Outcomes (CREDO) gained 40 additional days of learning growth in math and 28 days additional growth in reading.
In California, public charter students gain an additional 14 days of learning in reading.
In Los Angeles alone, charter students gain 50 more days of learning in reading and 79 more days of learning in math.
In New Orleans, charter students gain 50 more days of learning in reading and 65 more days of learning in math.
