Early in my education career, I sat at a conference dinner table surrounded by renowned K-12 leaders. As we discussed our philosophies on leadership, one superintendent’s response gave me chills - “My role is to put out fires.”

Hurricane Helene has left a trail of devastation across parts of North Carolina, with severe consequences for communities, schools, and children. The storm's powerful winds and torrential rains have caused widespread flooding, damaged infrastructure, and forced thousands of families to evacuate their homes. Schools, which serve as critical centers for both education and community support, have been hit particularly hard, leaving many students displaced and their education disrupted.

Back-to-school season is often filled with excitement and anxiety for students. While this is true for all students, including those who are neurotypical, neurodiverse, or disabled, back-to-school anxiety can be particularly pronounced among those who worry about fitting in or being accepted by their peers. As educators, we often focus on various strategies to ease this anxiety, but one solution that deserves more attention is inclusive education.

The New Niagara project is a modern-day initiative with deep historical roots, designed to define and improve the state of Black education in the United States. Based on the spirit of the original Niagara Movement of 1905, this five-city listening tour takes inspiration from its forebearers, aiming to create powerful, transformative change in education. Spearheaded by Dr. Charles Cole, III, and in collaboration with the Freedom Coalition of Charter Schools, the New Niagara project calls for a resurgence of advocacy and action, much like W.E.B. Du Bois and William Monroe Trotter did over a century ago.

Nobel Laureate Toni Morrison's words would have made her a literary giant no matter what, but her position as one of our country's 'most-banned' authors gives her an arguably more important distinction: as a teacher of a progressive and critical citizenry. Take a look at this sample of banned Morrison books and you'll notice a pattern:

Okay, education civilians. This is to follow up on a previous post about how we all should care about the complex inner workings of our public schools. We’re not experts on all the sciences behind what and how our kids learn, but we should at least be curious students. We should be engaged as good citizens, stretching ourselves to understand the public's most significant investment in youth and the nation’s future.

When discussing "failing" schools, we often skim the surface. We look at test scores, graduation rates, or the condition of the buildings. But behind all of that is a world most of us never see. It's a world full of science, research, and the mechanics of how teaching really works.

The “Facts of Life” for Gen Z: A Party That Has Abandoned Us

Republican Senator and vice presidential candidate JD Vance recently addressed the tragic school shooting in Georgia, stating, “I don’t like that this is a fact of life.” The “fact of life” he was referring to is the epidemic of gun violence that plagues our schools, communities, and future. What makes his comment truly alarming isn’t just the resignation of this reality but the complete absence of real solutions. Vance may not like that gun violence is a fact of life, but he, along with his party, continues to refuse to act — choosing inaction over protection.
