Better Results in Los Angeles Come at a Steep Price

Los Angeles Superintendent John Deasy gets results in a district that has been lagging for years. At the same time, his impatience puts him at odds with a school board that does not share his sense of urgency or appreciate his style, as the Los Angeles Times’ Jim Newton points out in a recent column.
But here's the perversity of punishing Deasy for aggressiveness: For more than 20 years, the dominant complaint about the district has been its lethargy.… To a parent with a child in school now, that's not reform; that's failure.
